During the Tournament of Roses, a network TV anchor said that the Lions International float represented "the world's largest service club." That's a distinction which I had heard for years belongs to Rotary International. Who's correct? - Joseph Benham, Kerrville, Texas

The Lions Club claims to be the largest service club, while Rotary says it is the oldest.

Lions Club International has more than 1.3 million members in 45,000 clubs, according to its Web site. Its first organizational meeting was held June 7, 1917, in Chicago and its headquarters is now in the suburb of Oak Brook.

Rotary International has 1.2 million members in 33,000 clubs, according to its Web site. The group was formed Feb. 23, 1905, in Chicago and it is headquartered in the suburb of Evanston.

Calgary Olympic Rotary hosts six terminally-ill children for Vanocuver Games

Rotary International The Rotary Club of Calgary Olympic is making an Olympic wish come true for six terminally ill children. The six families, who live in different parts of Canada, will attend several events at the games from 12 to 28 February.

Rotarians raise funds for Haiti

VOLUNTEERS pounded the streets of Witney to collect money for people devastated by the Haiti earthquake.

On Saturday, Witney Rotary Club collected £2,500 from outside Sainsbury’s, in Witan Way.

Collector John Milnes said: “The situation in Haiti is horrendous.

“Nobody can fail to be moved by the scenes of distress, confusion and utter hopelessness.

“This appeal is crucial to keep aid moving into the country and save more lives.

“It’s not just the earthquake that causes damage to lives – the aftermath can be equally devastating.”

Saturday’s collection was part of national Rotary Club appeal for donations.

RI launches new electronic publication

To better meet the needs of Rotary's club and district leaders, RI is replacing the Rotary World newsletter with Rotary Leader, an electronic publication featuring practical information about everyday tasks, specifically for club and district officers. | The preview issue of Rotary Leader was unveiled at the International Assembly on 22 January by General Secretary Ed Futa. The publication will officially launch with its April 2010 edition. | Like Rotary World, Rotary Leader will be published in nine languages: English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish. Peace fellow praises Rotary Peace Centers

Rotary Peace Fellow Nai-Hua Wu thanked Rotary for the opportunity to learn about conflict resolution and said the experience was the best of her life.

"I truly feel that this world is a better place because of Rotarians’ efforts," Wu said during the fifth plenary session of the 2010 International Assembly. "I want you to know that I am extremely grateful for the experience and that the investment you have made in this program is well worth it."

Networking session fosters Future Vision partnerships

After a long day of Future Vision Pilot Training, district leaders were ready to put their knowledge to work by swapping humanitarian project ideas with their peers.

“This is the way to do it. This is going to open up communications for leaders from pilot districts and then do the same for the rest of RI,” said Stephen May, governor-elect of District 7930 (parts of Massachusetts and New Hampshire, USA).
